About Borehamwood and Elstree Synagogue

Borehamwood and Elstree Synagogue (BES) was established in 1955 and is one of the fastest growing and most vibrant Jewish communities in the UK. Rabbi Alan Plancey and his wife Miriam led the comunity for over 30 years until 2007, when they retired. Following a sabbatical year, Rabbi Plancey was appointed the Emeritus Rabbi of the community.

On Rabbi Plancey's retirement, Rabbi Dr Naftali Brawer and his wife Dina joined the community. Rabbi Brawer stepped down from his position in the summer of 2011 in order to head a foundation, and Rabbi Shimshon Silkin, supported by Sarah, is standing in as our Interim Senior Rabbi while we search for a permanent replacement.

We are one of the largest United Synagogue (US) communities, with more than 1,200 families. Every Shabbat, hundreds of members attend services, with at least 100 children and youth attending specific services each Shabbat and Yomtov.

Within the community, there is wide range of activities held on the synagogue complex each week, including daily and weekly services, educational programmes for adults and youth, and events specifically for the youngest members of BES.
