Borehamwood and Elstree Synagogue

Next Steps

Initial plans have been drawn up that give an indication of what can be achieved within our existing boundaries. There are numerous issues to address, not least of which is funding, before any detailed plans can be progressed. However, that is just one of many aspects that will require time and a lot of work, so it would be remiss of us if we didn't start the process now rather than waiting until funding is secured to address many of the other issues.

We are therefore proposing that the following steps are taken:

1. A working party comprising suitably experienced and qualified people from the community is set up with overall responsibility for all aspects of the redevelopment. This will ensure that the project is managed professionally and lessons from the past are learnt.

2. A fund raising sub-committee is set up to investigate sources of external funding.

3. A logistical sub-committee is set up to consider the logistics of undertaking such a project whilst keeping the community and its services operational.

4. The plans are developed further to challenge the brief. This will require the appointment of further external construction professionals.

5. Approaches be made to Members of the community with appropriate skills to assist with relevant aspects of the project to limit fee expenditure.

We will be looking for assistance from members (in the first instance) from people with the following skills:

Fund RaisingLogisticsStrategy
IT / AVVAT / FinancePlanning
ConstructionMaintenanceSecurity
LegalCateringEducation

It is estimated that a major project of the scale envisaged will take at least a year to design and 18 months to construct, depending on any requirements to phase the works.

On the Plan Diagrams page are a number of images that give an indication of what is possible with our site. They currently show a 60%-70% increase in useable floor area.

Any major redevelopment will clearly be a multi million pound project. It is the aim of the Board to approach numerous funding sources so that any call on members is minimised. The United Synagogue will be asked for substantial direct investment and to fund the initial stages of the project, including the not unsubstantial work that will be required to obtain planning permission and start the fund raising process.

Considerable effort has gone into formulating the proposals and addressing the issues that came out of the process and it is proposed that an open meeting will be held for members to attend so that they can see the presentation that was made to the Board of Management and can ask any relevant questions.

Should you have any questions prior to a community meeting, please email .

Kind regards,

Anthony Arnold
